Live Your Dreams on the Flying Trapeze

Sex and the City fans will surely know the episode when Carrie attempts the flying trapeze. Ever since I saw Carrie struggle with doing a catch, I’d always been inspired to step outside my comfort zone and try the trapeze one day. This past July, my dream of flying through the air with the greatest of ease became a reality.

“I could never! I have the most terrible fear of heights!” – Charlotte

“Well, I do not…you’ve seen my shoes.” – Carrie

I’ve never been scared of heights. I enjoy roller coasters and I love an incredible view atop the highest skyscrapers. And not unlike Carrie Bradshaw, I live for my high heels. So I’m not quite sure what came over me when it was my turn to jump off the platform at TSNY Los Angeles.

The Trapeze School New York made its debut in the Big Apple in the summer of 2002. Shortly after, HBO featured the school in the popular Sex and the City episode “The Catch,” and the thrill-seeking phenomenon was born. It was only natural that the trend would hit the west coast, with TSNY Los Angeles opening an oceanfront facility on the Santa Monica Pier in 2008. With the beautiful Pacific Ocean on one side and the lively amusements of the pier all around, this is truly the perfect location.

After a brief 15-minute training session on land, it was time for my first flight. All around me were kids and teens looking cool as cucumbers as they awaited their turn. I knew I had to hold it together, but deep inside my heart was racing. Although I did gymnastics as a kid, I was terrified of getting up on the rig and jumping off. The sounds of kids screaming on nearby rollercoasters rang in my ear, only making me more nervous. My heart was pounding out of my chest as I climbed the metal ladder. My hands started to sweat while my breath quickened. When I reached the top and looked at the world below, I knew there was no turning back. With the guidance of a TSNY instructor, I put both hands on the heavy trapeze bar. In between long, deep breaths to calm my nerves, I anxiously listened to the instructor as she held on to my harness. My body was positioned with my weight forward to grasp the bar and my toes over the edge of the platform. All I could think was if she let go of the harness, I’d fall. I was told to listen to her exact cues. When she says “Ready,” I’m to bend my knees, and when she says “Hep,” I’m supposed to jump forward with my two feet together and swing through the air.

Snapshot 2 (8-27-2013 6-15 PM)

With the word “Ready” echoing in my ear, my mind suddenly went blank. When she said “Hep,” I completely froze. I shook my head apprehensively while the instructor said, “Why don’t we try that again. Take a deep breath, you’re going to do great.”

Before I know it, I’m holding on to the bar with all might and flying through the air faster than I’d imagined. When I reach the end of my first swing, I feel the sensation of free falling as I fly back towards the platform. I unconsciously let out a huge scream, as I lift my legs through the bar to perform a knee hang. Success. Now I’m to let go of my hands and extend my arms to simulate a catch. Success, again. Everyone around me cheers as I release from the bar and fall to the net below. My body is already sore and I’m out of breath…but I’m addicted. I want to fly again and again, and perfect my form with every swing.

After several practice flights that day, we end the class by attempting to do a catch. Only a few of us have received high enough praise from the instructors to try this release move; as I’m one of the four, I already feel a sense of accomplishment. But the challenge was before me, and I was more determined than ever to perfect this move.

DSC_0037

As I climbed the ladder for my final flight, I realized that all my fears from the start of class had disappeared. Once I learned to let go, I had the most fun that I’ve had in a long time. As it turns out, flying on the trapeze was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. Not only did I conquer my fears, but I lived one of my greatest dreams, and I had a hell of a time doing it!

Do you think I was able to complete the catch? Watch this video to find out!

“When you’re young, your whole life is about the pursuit of fun. Then, you grow up and learn to be cautious. You could break a bone or a heart. You look before you leap and sometimes you don’t leap at all because there’s not always someone there to catch you. And in life, there’s no safety net. When did it stop being fun and start being scary?” – Carrie Bradshaw

**Thanks to Blake Brody In-Studio Footwear for the best shoes for the flying trapeze! Not only are these adorable and comfortable flats great for barre and pilates, but they were perfect for my circus adventure with TSNY Los Angeles.  They provided incredible support and protected my feet from the safety net!

What to Wear to a Class Reunion: eHow Style Video

Whether your 5th or 40th class reunion is coming up, figuring out what to wear can always be a daunting task.  The biggest mistake you can make when dressing for this occasion is selecting clothing that you’re not comfortable in.  The most important thing is to showcase your personality and style, and it doesn’t matter if it’s vastly different from your high school or college persona!  From casual to formal class reunions, select a few simple items to create an outfit that is comfy, stylish and chic, and not to mention, the best representation of you!  And remember, the best accessory is confidence – so stand tall and proud…and smile!

Here are some sophisticated wardrobe choices for any class reunion:

1)  LBD:  You can’t go wrong with a little black dress!

2)  Knee length dress:  Solid colors and refined prints are best.  Opt for a style that fits and flatters your figure, such as a sheath or a-line skirt.

3)  Slim pants:  Depending on how formal the event is, slim black pants or dark denim are great options that can be easily dressed up with a blouse, heels, and pretty jewelry.

4)  Blazer:  Pair this classic piece with everything from a floral dress to pants and a silk tank.

Good Dresses for Traveling: eHow Style Video

The summer travel season is officially upon us!  But before we head to distant lands for some much deserved R&R, we need to do a little prep work – the most important being to pack a well stocked and versatile wardrobe!

Womens-Traveling-Tips-Packing-Light-riseofreason.net

Here are some tips to keep in mind when packing for your upcoming vacation:

1) Pack clothing and accessories that are versatile.  Jeans, nice shorts, skirts, and good fitting dresses (short or maxi) are great travel options that can be dressed up or down.  Solid color tanks, tees and blouses are also smart choices.

2) Create multiple outfits by mixing and matching your items.  For example, wear a dress with flat sandals for day and when night falls, swap them out for sexy heels and jewelry.

3) Select items that travel well, are breathable and don’t wrinkle easily.  Cottons, knits, poly-blends, and silk jersey are best.

Oscars 2013 Best Dressed

Last night’s Oscars telecast was reminiscent of Old Hollywood, an era of classic films and refined style.  The stars were aligned for Tinseltown’s best talent, as they graced the red carpet with beauty and grace.  With so many impeccably dressed celebs, it was difficult to narrow down my favorites.  Here is my Oscars 2013 Best Dressed List – chime in below to let me know if your faves made the cut!

Halle Berry wowed in a custom, art-deco inspired gown by Versace.  The former bond girl rocked this sexy look from head to toe, from her absolutely perfect pixie hair cut down to her fab Jimmy Choo shoes.

Jessica Chastain was ethereal in a nude metallic, strapless Armani Prive gown with a sweetheart neckline.  Her Harry Winston jewels, side swept hair and Christian Louboutin heels were perfect accents to complete her glamorous look.

Jennifer Garner was breathtaking in a custom gown by Gucci.  The deep plum hue was a beautiful pop of color, while her vintage Neil Lane necklace and cascading ruffles added a bit of drama to this elegant ensemble.

Charlize Theron was effortlessly chic in a winter white gown by Dior Haute Couture.  The statuesque star turned heads on the red carpet, showing off a shorter hair do and a dazzling Harry Winston diamond cuff.

1C455DD9 Oscars2013_amy_adams-Oscar de la Renta

One of the few ball gowns on the Oscars red carpet, Amy Adams was pretty as a princess in a powder blue Oscar de la Renta dress.  The strapless bodice and dramatic skirt looked perfect on the petite star, while her simple updo and jewels were just enough to not overpower her romantic ensemble.

Oscars13 Stacy Kiebler-Naeem Khan Lorraine Schwartz2 Oscars13 Stacy Kiebler-Naeem Khan Lorraine Schwartz4

Stacy Kiebler was flawless in a jaw dropping, gun metal Naeem Khan gown.  The metallic beading, belted waist and sheer back showcased her incredible figure.  The question remains though, which was Stacy’s best accessory – her Lorraine Schwartz jewels or George Clooney?

Honorable Mention

While the above stars made my official Oscars 2013 best dressed, I just had to mention the following ladies too!

Simply Hair (Part 2) with Kazumi Morton

Kazumi Morton is the Isaac Newton of Hollywood hair color. The renowned “hair chemist” has transformed the locks of some of the biggest stars in Tinseltown, from Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, to Christina Applegate and Shannon Dougherty. Kazumi has perfected the fine art of hair color, specifically natural, sun kissed highlights. Her philosophy is pure and simple – less is more.

1C11BEE3

Praised as the “Best Brunette Specialist” in 2011 by LA Weekly, I was thrilled when I was able to secure an appointment with Kazumi Morton. As someone who has had bad experiences with hair color in the past, I was hesitant to make any dramatic changes. After viewing some of Kazumi’s work on her Tumblr page, I was reassured but still anxious. I sent her photos prior to our appointment, part of her regular consultation process with new clients. For Kazumi, the consultation is the most important factor to achieve great results. She truly listens to her clients, understanding what their ultimate goals are. Do they want a subtle change or a total transformation? After chatting with Kazumi for ten minutes about the ghosts of my hair color’s past, I’m comforted by her intuitive nature and honest feedback. This is perhaps what makes her the go-to colorist for finicky Angelenos. Kazumi may have a gentle demeanor, but she’s not afraid to tell her clients the truth, or even turn them away if she doesn’t agree with what they want to do to their hair. Her passion for hair color is evident when she says, “My hands and my heart won’t let me give my clients a look that is unflattering.”

Kazumi-188

With over 16 years of experience in the industry, Kazumi is like an encyclopedia of hair color knowledge. From pH levels and the damaging effects of bleaching to the intricate details of the color wheel, Kazumi has been educating her clients, colleagues and students across the globe since 1998. She immediately says that she will not be bleaching my hair and that this is not a good option, especially for my naturally dark, ethnic hair. Rather, her plan is to give me highlights with just Hair Color, a gentler, more controlled approach. No bleach? No lifting of my base hair color before applying the highlights? I’m intrigued and curious – why has no other colorist ever recommended this technique to me before? While it may not be a new discovery, applying highlights with Hair Color is a more refined method, one that is safer and less stressful on your hair. And the perfect option for those who are new to the world of hair color.

DSCF3158

After a couple hours in Kazumi’s chair, it was finally time to remove the foils and reveal my new highlights. When my blowout is complete, I turn around to see soft, warm, glowing hints of caramel within my dark brown tresses. I sense that Kazumi is disappointed that the color is not as pronounced as she would have liked. “It seems your hair is a bit resistant to color,” she says to me with a laugh. Perhaps after years of Sun-In, boxed hair dye, and botched color treatments, my hair has learned to be cautious. Or maybe, Kazumi’s method was the answer to my hair color prayers. Although she invites me back to the salon to add more color in the coming weeks, I decide to enjoy my understated highlights as they are. With time, the highlights have naturally lightened up, as if I had spent the winter months on a tropical island. They are delicate, radiant, and simply beautiful.

Highlights with Kazumi Morton, $300 & Up. JONATHAN and GEORGE Salon, 9320 Civic Center Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. Salon Hours are Mon-Tue 9am-5pm, Wed-Sat 8am-6pm, Sunday Closed. (310) 275-2808

SAG Awards 2013 Best Dressed

While there may have been more fashion misses than hits at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, there were definitely a handful of standout style stars.  Here’s my list of the Best Dressed from the SAG’s red carpet:

1C337500

Jessica Chastain was the epitome of Old Hollywood glamour in a red Alexander McQueen gown with a sweetheart neckline and fitted bodice.  Her Harry Winston necklace was just the right amount of sparkle to complete her stunning look.

1C3378C9

Despite her slight wardrobe malfunction while accepting her Best Actress award, Jennifer Lawrence was flawless in a strapless navy Dior Haute Couture column gown.  Her side swept hair was the ideal style to showcase her delicate Chopard jewels.

SAG13-ellie-kemper-Reem Acra Neil Lane Jewels Swarovski Clutch

Ellie Kemper was a refreshing dose of color in a romantic Reem Acra gown.  Her seafoam, chiffon dress is on trend for spring and fit the actress like a glove.  Her Swarovski clutch and Neil Lane jewels were dazzling complements to her mermaid-like ensemble.

1C3384B2

Elisabeth Moss was chic and sophisticated in a black Dolce & Gabbana strapless cocktail dress with a sequin skirt.  The knee length ensemble was an appropriate choice for the SAG Awards, while her embellished Jimmy Choo clutch and patent leather Christian Louboutin pumps were the perfect finishing touches.

1C337327

Jenna Fisher was simply beautiful in a Jenny Packham gown with sheer sleeves and metallic silver accents. She accessorized her lovely look with Forevermark diamonds and an oversized clutch.
